GET THE BREASTS YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED

Wouldn’t it be nice if breasts stayed the exact same size and shape forever as we go through our lives? Well unfortunately, this is not the case.
As we get older, weight fluctuations, age, genetics, pregnancy and even gravity can change the size and shape of women’s breasts.

But these changes don’t have to mean that women must live with breasts that make them feel unattractive.

Breast augmentation surgery can help women achieve breasts of a size and shape that they feel proud of, giving them confidence in their appearance. It’s actually one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed today!

So why go through life feeling less attractive than you could?

Read on to see if breast augmentation is right for you.

+ SURGICAL PROCEDURE

During a breast augmentation surgery, the surgeon will place a breast implant to create the breast of an ideal size and shape.

This implant will go either under the breast tissue and over the chest muscle, or under both the breast tissue and chest muscle, depending on your body. These implants can help balance out the breasts and restore their volume and shape.

If you have significantly sagging or drooping breasts, breast augmentation might not be the right procedure for you. In this case, a breast lift might be necessary.

Breast implants used in augmentation are filled with silicone gel or saline, and are encased in a non-reactive silicone material. This outside casing can be either smooth or slightly rough, depending on your unique body and preferences for results.

There are many sizes, shapes and styles of breast implants that your doctor will go over with you. Make sure to speak at length with your doctor about what you hope to achieve with your breast augmentation, so they can help select the right type of breast implant.

Implants are inserted after an incision either at the nipple, under the breast or under the armpit. Your surgeon will go over with you where they will make the incision so you will be prepared for the procedure.

+ PRE-OPERATIVE CARE

Before the operation, you will need to consult with your surgeon to determine exactly what type of procedure will be best for you. Be clear on your desired cup size and shape, so the doctor can determine what type of implant to use and where to place it.

Let your surgeon know if you are taking any medications, whether prescription or non-prescription, and whether you have any allergies or medical conditions.

It’s important to stop smoking for at least 2 weeks before surgery, because this can affect how you react to the anesthetics. It can also prolong the healing process if you’ve been smoking.

Also stop taking Aspirin, blood-thinning meds and vitamins and herbs for at least 2 weeks before surgery, as this will reduce the chance of post-operative bleeding.

Absolutely do not eat any food or consume any liquids for at least 6 hours before surgery. And do not drink alcohol for 24 hours before surgery.

During the surgery, remove all jewelry, piercings and makeup.

+ POST OPERATIVE CARE AND RECOVERY

After surgery, it is recommended to try to start walking as soon as possible to help your circulation and reduce any swelling or chances of blood clots.

You’ll have your bandages removed on the second day after surgery, at which point you will be free to shower normally.

Expect some bruising, swelling and soreness for up to a week or two after surgery.

You might also feel some mild numbness, burning sensations or extra sensitivity during this time. These side effects should disappear after 2 weeks.

Stay away from swimming pools and bath tubs while your incisions are healing. These are environments for bacteria, and if any bacteria gets into openings in the wounds, it can cause infections.

Avoid rigorous activity for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery, and wear a sports bra day and night for the first 3 to 4 weeks.

After soreness subsides, you can resume your normal physical activity and exercise.

+ RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS

While complications after breast augmentation surgery are relatively rare, they do occur so it’s important to be aware of the risks.

If the shell around the implant begins to tighten and thicken, a woman can experience capsular contracture, where the breast feels hard.
This can be prevented by massaging the breasts regularly.

Breasts can also become infected if not properly cared for after surgery, in which case the implant may need to be removed or replaced.

If you go in for an X-ray to scan for breast cancer, let your technician know that you have breast implants.
